Crush of the Week: Elnett Hairspray

8 06 2009

I’ve been reading about this hairspray for some time, and apparently forever it was only available in Europe because it released too many CFCs for the FDA’s approval. Well, now the formula and dispenser have been tweaked and are now USA-friendly! Elnett, by Loreal, is supposed to be the BEST hairspray known to (wo)mankind. It is only available at Target for now (contrary to first reports stating it would be available at Walgreen’s), and yesterday I picked up the “Extra-Strong Hold for Colored Hair.” It claims to protect hair from UV rays, hold like it’s freshly styled, and prevent nasty frizzies and fallout from humidity. I was super-excited about the UV-blocker, since I just got my highlights done on Saturday (yay summer color!). It was $14.99 which I usually refuse to pay for drugstore hair products, but I figured that 1) I usually pay upwards of $25 for my Bumble & Bumble products, and 2) Target will let me return it IF I keep my receipt.

Well, I’m going on hour 5 with the Elnett, and I am happy to report that my hair feels silky smooth – it lived up to the claim that it “disappears with the stroke of a brush” – and it is one of the hottest, most humid days we have had so far in 2009 (it rained at 5:00 this morning and is now in the 90s), and my hair is still perfectly in place. My vote? Elnett is a definite MUST-BUY!

When I have $$

8 06 2009

After the bar exam, when my wonderful Husband has a full-time job and we are no longer slaves to penny-pinching and student loans, THIS IS WHAT I AM TREATING MYSELF TO:

Kindle 2 = LOVE

Kindle 2 = LOVE

Katherine has the new Kindle and when she was here last weekend, I just got a glimpse of it because we were crazy busy. However, when I go to Houston in a couple of weeks, I plan to kidnap it and make sure it’s what I want – because far too often I buy something, only to return it a few days later because I expect it to completely revolutionize my world and it does NOT. But having talked to her at LENGTH about the Kindle 2, I believe it will be exactly what I need (especially since I just did my second bookshelf purge of 2009). ALSO, since the new iPhone and software are being released this month, AND since the iPhone features a Kindle app where you can sync them and pick up where you left off (so convenient not having to lug around 2 electronic devices at all times, especially since the Kindle won’t fit in a clutch or my pockets)…I plan on getting an iPhone to go with my Kindle. LOVE LOVE LOOOOVE!

Do you have a Kindle? THOUGHTS??

New Faves: Makeup Must-Haves

1 06 2009

So since summer is officially here, I began my annual hunt for the “perfect summer foundation.” My requirements are that it must be light but provide moderate coverage, it can’t get streaky or melt off, easy to apply, minimum SPF 15, and natural-looking. With the wonderful humidity in Tulsa, I usually forego makeup all-together in the summer, since any makeup I wear sweats off by about noon. Over the winter I used Smashbox’s cream-to-powder foundation, and it was great. However, it seemed a bit thick for what I like in the summer, and I know it wouldn’t last on me. SO this weekend I stopped by my old faithful and trust-worthy Bobbi Brown counter in Dillard’s, and I found some new staples:

Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener: I had heard/read about eye brightener but never really thought I had under-eye circles or needed any help. This stuff is a MIRACLE. It made my eyes pop and made me look completely refreshed!

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF 15: so weightless and easy to apply! It seriously feels as if I have nothing on my face, but makes my skin look completely flawless. If you buy no other cosmetics for the summer, BUY THIS!

My day look is completed with a swipe of MAC Shadestick in “Shimmersand” and Dior Iconic Mascara in Black (the only color it comes in – people on the street ask me about my lashes when I wear it!).

What are your summer makeup must-haves??

Did You Know?

5 02 2009

Did you know that your feet can shrink when you lose weight??

So my senior year of college, I lost about 30 pounds, and fluctuated up and down 5 or so pounds for a couple of years. Then last year, before my wedding, I lost another 15 or so pounds. Well, since then, I’ve noticed that some of my favorite shoes – or even new shoes – seemed  to fit looser. I just assumed they had been stretched out or needed to be “broken in” (although I think that if you buy the right shoes, they’ll NEVER need to be broken in).

Anyway, last week I was at Dillard’s, hitting up the massive end-of-season shoe sale, and trying on a pair of gorgeous pewter loafers in my traditional size 7.5. Well they just seemed so loose and floppy and not-at-all flattering, so the sales lady suggested I try on a 7. She said they had a 7 narrow, so I tried it on (I hadn’t worn a 7 since middle school, and I had never even tried on a narrow).  Well, it fit like a GLOVE! I don’t need to wear a sock or anything, and they fit like they were made for my feet.

Imagine my surprise when 1) I fit into a shoe size I hadn’t worn since I was under 5-feet tall (no jokes, please) and 2) the first question the sales lady asked me was, “Have you lost a good amount of weight lately?” I don’t know this lady. She doesn’t know if I used to weigh almost 50 pounds more than I do now.

Anyway, she explained that when you lose a significant amount of weight (more than 5 or so pounds), it’s not uncommon to go down a shoe size. I just thought it was weird, and good to know, and taught me that as much as I hate it, it really is a good idea to try on shoes rather than just buy the size I think I need (Ex: I bought the loafers in a size 7, but got a pair of heels in a 7.5).

Happy Shopping!

P.S. These are the “other” shoes I bought that day…Aren’t they adorable?
